| INFORMATION FOR BEGINNING CURLERS AND NEW MEMBERS The Bridgewater Curling Club welcomes beginners to learn to play a great game, as well as new members who may have played before, to have a lot of fun, get some exercise, meet new people and enjoy the friendly social life that’s a defining part of our club. “Learn to Curl” for Beginner Curlers We offer a free “Learn to Curl” session from Noon to 3:00 PM, Sunday December 11, 2011 so you can try out the sport with no commitment before deciding if you wish to take out a membership. This is open to both Members and Non-Members and is ideal for beginners who are considering curling after Christmas. What to wear or bring to start curling Eventually you may wish to buy curling shoes and certain clothing that’s available, but you don’t need them to learn to curl. Most importantly, bring a pair of comfortable, clean sneakers that you can wear just for curling. This helps protect the ice surface. You will probably want a pair of gloves. Wear warm and comfortable clothing in layers because it can get quite warm on the ice with a bit of exercise, especially in early fall. We will provide sliders and brooms. Some curlers use a stabilizer for support when delivering rocks, and these are also available at the club. People of all ages and abilities can enjoy curling, including those who have knee, hip, or back issues that restrict mobility to a certain extent. As long as you’re comfortable standing on the ice and using a broom for sweeping, you can deliver your rocks using a “stick” which is designed for the purpose, and which we will provide. New Members The Bridgewater Curling Club is a great place to curl and socialize. We’ re just the right size; small enough and friendly so you get to know other members quickly, yet large enough for a diversity of personalities and curling abilities. We’re located at 90 Dominion St., right across from the fire hall. We offer evening curling for those who are busy through the day, and we have daytime curling if that suits your schedule. Some members do both! New members who wish to curl in the evening are guaranteed places on teams. Most daytime curling is done on a daily walk-in format where teams are made up and everyone gets to play. We curl from October to April. If you like to go away for part of the winter, our schedule is organized in two halves, pre and post- Christmas. You can sign up for a full year or either half-year, whatever suits you. We have four sheets of ice renowned throughout Nova Scotia for the quality of its playability. Our club has a large lounge area overlooking the ice as well as a bar and kitchen area. The lounge, a washroom and the ice surface are fully wheelchair accessible. There is a second lounge area available for large events. Personal curling equipment and clothing is available for sale at the club at very competitive prices. Every Friday we have a social night combined with curling. We also hold “funspiels” such as the Turkeyspiel and Lobsterspiel where the emphasis is definitely on fun for members and guests, including whole families. Daytime curlers host and visit other local clubs in friendly competition that has been going on for decades. MEMBERSHIP REGISTRATION Anyone joining the club to curl between January and the end of March can curl in every league we have for a total of $177.00. This is the best sports and entertainment bargain in Bridgewater! CURLING LEAGUES FOR BEGINNERS AND NEW MEMBERS We offer curling four days and five evenings per week, with each evening or day of play being considered a ”league”. Beginning members would probably not be part of an existing team or “rink” for competitive curling. However, Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings offer social curling, with individuals signing up on a list and rinks put together for each half- year. This is also great for new members with curling experience but who don’ t know others to form a team. Two or three games are scheduled for each evening. Daytime curling is as follows: Men’s: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. Lady’s: Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Anyone: Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon.
